Mitta is mecca for fishing, canoeing, bush walking and as a touring base for an extensive system of 4WD tracks. A network of walking tracks provides access to the magnificent views of the Valley and the historical mining sites around the town. Down the road there is the Witches Garden and the amazing Dartmouth Dam, the tallest in Australia.
The town has a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts and a picturesque picnic and swimming area on Snowy Creek. There is certainly plenty to make your family stay at Mitta Mitta the perfect holiday!
The Mitta River, creeks and streams around Mitta are perfect for the serious fisher. Rainbow trout, river blackfish, carp and the occssional Maquarie Perch can be found in the area. Murray cod used to be abundant, declinded but are now returning . Make sure you are aware of the season openings and size limits. Locations .
A patchwork of walking tracks around the town provide an excellent opportunity to checkout the historic mining areas, enjoy the views and the local flora and fauna. Favourite tracks are the Deep Gully and River Walks (easy) and the Mt Wills walk (hard). Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to complete your journey safely.
The Mighty Mitta Muster on the March long weekend is a must. Make a real weekend of it; pack the tent, throw in the swag and be sure to take the camera too. You will capture some of Australia's most scenic country, great riverbank locations, some good action shots and plenty of friendly smiling faces.
The Mitta Mitta River is famous for white water rafting either through a local commercial operator or by more leisurely trips in canoes or kayaks. Then there is the popular swimming hole and BBQ area on Snowy Creek behind the Mitta Pub

The Pioneer Mine provides the backdrop to the town and at one time was the largest open cut gold mine in the State. Hydraulic sluicing using water jets were used to hose down the walls and to uncover the gold left by an earlier diversion of the river. A walking track within the base of the mine takes around 45 mins to complete the circuit. As well as mining artefacts and tunnels, look out for the peregrine falcons that nest on the cliff faces and lyre birds that frequent the damp parts of the mine.
The Witches Garden boasts the largest collection of medicinal plants in Australia and is dedicated to preserving their history and folklore. Located on the Mitta-Dartmouth road.
The Snowy Creek is an excellent starting spot for panning. Many other areas are suitable, but there are some streamsides where disturbance is prohibited. Be sure to check on the need for a Miners Right. Like golf and polo, the rules require that you replace the divet and leave the area as you found it. And don 't bother with a gold detector, the gold in the Mitta area is very fine and no real nuggets have ever been found.
The Dartmouth Dam (17kms from Mitta) is the largest capacity dam in Victoria and the highest structure of its kind in Australia. When full, the dam stores almost 4,000,000 megalitres (ML). Well worth a visit ! Water has gone over the spillway twice in its history. Checkout the Dartmouth township & pub in an amazing beautiful setting.
Granite Flat was once a thriving mining town with a large Chinese population. Currently being explored for copper and gold, all that remains is the old Catholic Church. and a small cemetery.
Scenic tourism is popular, explore the magnificent Mitta Valley and check out the high country views, Mt Bogong is spectacular in winter. A drive up the Omeo Highway towards Omeo follows the old coach road with great views. For those with 4WDs there are numerous spectacular tracks but check opening closing dates beforehand - and there is no mobile phone coverage!
Eskdale started with gold but then became the dairy centre for the Mitta Valley. Start with the visitor centre, beaufort crash and war memorials, pub and general store, the walking track offers great views of the valley. 24 hour fuel, supermarket and an AG rural supplies store is important for locals and visitors.
